Go to Google and search:

What is the best accounting software for a growing company in Kenya?

Ten years ago, you would have seen a tidy list of blue links. You would have opened three tabs, endured three suspiciously cheerful sales pages and made up your mind.

Today, you may see an AI Overview before the first traditional result. Ask the same question in ChatGPT or Perplexity and you may get a comparison assembled from several sources. Sometimes there are links. Sometimes the answer is enough.

The buyer can form an opinion about your market without visiting your website.

That changes the job.

So, what is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO helps your pages get discovered and ranked in traditional search results. AEO makes your information easy to extract for direct answers. GEO improves the chance that generative systems can find, understand and cite your evidence when they assemble a response.

The labels are useful. The borders are messy.

Google now treats AEO and GEO as terms for work within the wider search experience. Its AI features still depend on the Search index and core ranking systems. ChatGPT has its own search crawler and source-selection process.

You do not need three disconnected strategies.

You need one strong discovery system that can survive three different moments of choice.

That connected model is part of what we call attention engineering.

This is a practical model, not a law of physics.

The layers overlap. A page cannot earn reliable AI visibility if machines cannot crawl it. A clean answer block will not rescue weak information. Schema can clarify meaning, but it cannot turn porridge into steak.

The foundation still matters.

1. SEO: Get discovered

Search engine optimization is the foundation.

It covers the work that helps search engines find, understand, index and rank your pages. That includes technical crawlability, useful content, internal links, relevant external authority and a page experience that does not punish the visitor.

SEO is still essential because Google remains a major route to the open web. It also feeds Google's generative results. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet before it can qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Classic search is especially useful when a buyer wants to:

  • Compare detailed specifications
  • Inspect a product catalogue
  • Verify local credentials
  • Find a service near them
  • Complete a transaction

The blue link is not dead. It simply has noisy neighbours now.

2. AEO: Become the direct answer

Answer engine optimization focuses on direct questions.

Someone asks, “How much does payroll software cost in Kenya?” They want the number, the conditions and the catch. They do not want a 1,500-word warm-up about how payroll has changed since the invention of money.

AEO makes the answer easier to locate and understand.

That usually means:

  • Answering the core question early
  • Using descriptive headings
  • Keeping definitions clear
  • Presenting steps and comparisons in sensible formats
  • Supporting claims with current evidence
  • Making the page easy to crawl

This matters in a click-scarce environment. A 2026 SparkToro analysis of Similarweb's US mobile and desktop clickstream panel found that 68.01% of Google searches in the first four months of the year ended without a click.

That figure is not a universal law. It covers US browser behaviour, not every country, app or query. Still, the direction is clear. Many searchers get enough information from the results page to continue without visiting a website.

AEO helps your information compete in that moment.

It does not let you command Google to quote you. Google says its systems decide snippet eligibility. Clear formatting improves usability and eligibility. It does not buy a reserved seat.

3. GEO: Become usable evidence

Generative engine optimization focuses on synthesized answers.

A buyer is no longer asking for ten pages about CRM software. They are asking:

Compare these two CRM platforms for a 40-person sales team. Include price, implementation risk and WhatsApp integration.

The system may break that request into several searches. It may retrieve multiple sources. It may then combine the evidence into one answer.

Your job is to make your business easy to discover, understand and verify during that process.

Good GEO work includes:

  • Crawlable, indexable pages
  • Original facts and first-hand expertise
  • Clear authorship and credentials
  • Specific claims with credible sources
  • Consistent business information across the web
  • Useful comparisons that expose limits as well as strengths
  • Access for relevant search crawlers

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI says public sites can appear and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot to access content intended for summaries, citations and links.

The best-known early GEO study found that certain content changes could improve source visibility by up to 40% in its experimental setting. Adding citations, quotations and statistics performed well in some subject areas.

There is an important catch.

The result was conditional. The source was already available to the system in a controlled benchmark. The study did not prove that adding three statistics will push any page into ChatGPT by Friday.

GEO is a real discipline. It is not magic seasoning.

The myth that keeps selling expensive nonsense

You may hear that SEO is for Google, AEO is for AI Overviews and GEO is for ChatGPT.

That is tidy. It is also too tidy.

Google's AI experiences use retrieval from its Search index. ChatGPT search can retrieve current web sources and provide citations. Perplexity behaves differently again. The systems change. The sources vary. The same prompt can produce different answers on different days.

There is no secret GEO schema that makes every model recommend your company.

Google explicitly says there is no special structured data required for its generative AI features. Standard structured data can help search engines understand a page and can make it eligible for rich results. It does not guarantee a ranking, citation or recommendation.

The future of search marketing is less about chasing a new acronym every quarter.

It is about building stronger public evidence.

The proof from US telehealth

This is not academic theory for us. We lived through the shift in one of the hardest markets online.

Before founding Attention Lasso, I spent more than five years leading digital growth for Quick Med Cards, a US telehealth brand. Healthcare is unforgiving. Advertising platforms restrict many medical campaigns. Search systems scrutinize health claims. Patients need clear answers, but the rules change from state to state.

We could not survive on generic wellness blogs and positive thinking.

We built a discovery system:

  • State-specific pages answered real regulatory questions
  • Medical claims used appropriate clinical and government sources
  • Provider credentials were made clear
  • Structured data helped machines interpret the organisation and its content
  • Internal linking connected related answers into a usable architecture

The first-party results were substantial:

  • 62,800 brand citations in AI-generated answers
  • 92% quarter-over-quarter growth in measured AI visibility
  • 165% improvement in organic conversion rate
  • Patient registrations grew from 49,200 to 72,100, a 46.5% year-over-year increase

These figures come from internal company reporting and are not independently audited. They are shared here as a case study, not as a promise that every business will see the same result.

The full operating context sits on The Boss page.

If cautious systems can find, interpret and cite useful answers in regulated US telehealth, East African businesses can apply the same principles. The subject may be easier. The engineering still needs to be good.

How to win all three

The strongest strategy does not choose between SEO, AEO and GEO. It gives each layer a job.

Business testDid the right buyer arrive?Did the answer build trust?Did the brand enter the shortlist?

Here is what that looks like in practice.

Start with commercial intent

Map the questions buyers ask before they spend money. Build pages around real decisions, not keyword volume alone.

Our SEO, AEO and GEO systems begin with those decision points.

Publish evidence worth retrieving

Use first-party experience, verified numbers, named authors and credible external sources. Say what your product cannot do too. Honest limits make comparisons more useful.

Make the site technically available

Check robots rules, canonical tags, sitemaps, internal links and indexability. If the page is blocked, buried or duplicated, clever prose will not save it.

Use structured data for clarity

Apply valid schema where it describes what is actually on the page. Think Organization, Person, Article, Service and BreadcrumbList when appropriate.

Schema is a label. It is not a bribe.

Measure decisions, not decoration

Track qualified search traffic, assisted conversions, branded demand, answer visibility and cited-source presence. Google's generative AI performance reports in Search Console now provide dedicated visibility data for AI features in Search and Discover.

Then connect that visibility to leads and revenue. Otherwise, you have simply invented a more futuristic vanity metric.

Frequently asked questions

Does my business still need classic SEO if AI search is growing?

Yes. SEO makes your site discoverable, crawlable and indexable. Google's generative search features use its Search index and ranking systems. AEO and GEO extend the foundation. They do not replace it.

How do AI engines choose which brands to cite or recommend?

There is no single public formula. Systems may retrieve current web pages, use search partners, weigh relevance and assemble evidence from several sources. Clear facts, original expertise, crawler access and credible corroboration improve your chances. None guarantees a recommendation.

Is AEO just featured-snippet optimization?

No. Featured snippets are one answer surface. AEO is the broader practice of making accurate information easy to extract for direct responses.

Does schema make ChatGPT cite my website?

No. Structured data can help machines interpret entities and page content. It cannot force ChatGPT, Google or Perplexity to cite you.

How long does generative engine optimization take?

There is no credible universal timeline. Measure a baseline, make controlled improvements and track repeated prompts and business outcomes over time.

Can Attention Lasso optimize an existing website for all three?

Yes. We audit discovery gaps, technical access, content quality, entity clarity and conversion paths. Then we rebuild the weak points as one connected system.

The labels overlap. The outcome should not.
